What to Know About Tooth Extraction

01 December 2018

Your dental situation may one day require one of your teeth to be removed. This tooth extraction can feel more comfortable if you know what to expect from the procedure and aftermath. Here at East Erie Dental, we aim to give our patients the information they need to ask questions or express their concerns freely with our team. Here is what you need to know about tooth extraction.

Who Needs a Tooth Extraction?
Teeth can be extracted for a variety of reasons. Some people need a tooth extraction to make room for dental implants or devices, while others need extraction to stop the spread of infection. Both adults and children can undergo a tooth extraction procedure, and dentists can recommend removing adult or baby teeth, depending on the situation.

What Happens During a Tooth Extraction?
Depending on which tooth or teeth you are having extracted, you may experience the procedure while alert (with use of novocaine), or while “asleep” due to general anesthesia. While most quick tooth extraction procedures can happen with a general dentist, some procedures require the expertise of an oral surgeon. In either case, the dental professional extracts the tooth using a few tools, assuring any infection that was present is eliminated during the process.

What is Recovery Like?
Recovery can vary from patient to patient, and from procedure to procedure. For example, wisdom tooth extraction can cause pronounced swelling and discomfort. Other tooth extraction procedures can cause only minimal bleeding and low pain.

Follow the directions from your dentist carefully, and ask for help from family members so that you can rest and recover. If you have any questions or concerns after your tooth extraction procedure, call your dentist to talk about it.

At East Erie Dental, we are committed to providing every patient with exceptional dental care. We know that tooth extraction can feel overwhelming at times, but the procedure can be imperative to your overall dental health.
