Habits for Healthy Gums

01 June 2020

When most people consider their dental habits, they think only of the habits that keep their teeth strong and healthy. While excellent care does reduce your chance for cavities and increase your chances of a healthy smile, it is also imperative to adapt habits that will keep your gums healthy as well.

  • Risks of unhealthy gums
Your gums are an important part of your mouth. When not kept healthy, gums can become soft and damaged. Unhealthy gums can bleed, be painful, and even cause tooth loss. Gum disease, or periodontitis, affects as many as half of all adults in America, according to estimates from the Centers for Disease Control. Fortunately, you can decrease your risk of gum disease by adapting a few healthy habits.
  • Floss daily
We know that many individuals are not exactly fond of flossing. It seems like it is one more task to add on to your already busy schedule. However, flossing daily can significantly reduce your chances of unhealthy gums and is well worth the extra few minutes of effort during your oral care routine.
  • Manage your diabetes
Believe it or not, diabetes can increase the chances of getting periodontitis. If you have diabetes, be sure that your dentist knows about it. Work with your doctor to assure your blood sugars are consistently in check and that you are feeling well.
  • Brush your teeth
When you brush your teeth, don’t neglect your gums or gum line. Your gum line is the perfect place for bacteria to make home, and without attentive brushing, you may be missing out on an opportunity to sweep away harmful sugar.
  • Steer clear of sweets
Sugary treats and beverages can cause your gums to become unhealthy. Enjoy these treats in moderation and brush after. If you can’t get to your toothbrush, drink plenty of water to rinse the sugar from your mouth.
  • See your dentist
Most importantly, be sure you are keeping up with seeing your dentist twice per year. Our office professionals are able to find early signs of gum disease and give you advice on how to reverse the damage, but we can’t help you if you aren’t in our chair twice per year.
